Facial Wrinkles, Scars, and Sun-Damaged Skin

Facial laser resurfacing utilizes high-energy, pulsed, and scanned lasers. Pulsed CO2 and erbium lasers effectively reduce and remove facial wrinkles, acne scars, and sun-damaged skin. The CO2 laser is generally considered the gold standard for facial rejuvenation, typically resulting in a significant improvement. Side effects include post-operative tenderness, redness, swelling, and scarring. Redness and tenderness can last several weeks as new skin grows over the treated area. These ablative laser systems can yield excellent results when used properly. Recently, non-ablative lasers have been used for dermal remodeling. ‘Non-ablative’ refers to heating the dermal collagen while cooling the epidermis to avoid damage. Multiple treatments are required to smooth the skin. Dr Tanreet’s skin hair & laser centre is equipped with Best CO2 laser treatment at an affordable cost.

Other Uses for Lasers in Dermatology

Lasers can remove viral warts, skin tags, genital molluscum, corns through vaporization (CO2 laser) or dermal blood vessel destruction (PDL). The CO2 laser can also remove various skin lesions, including seborrhoeic keratoses and skin cancers, by vaporization or cutting mode.

Laser treatment for acne with Violet-blue metal halide light (407-420 nm) has been used to treat acne by targeting the acne-causing bacteria, Cutibacterium acnes. Laser treatment for vitiligo and psoriasis with The Excimer laser is available at Dr Tanreet ‘s skin clinic, Amritsar

Laser Safety

Safety precautions depend on the laser system and setting, including:

  • Thorough training of personnel
  • Eye protection for patients and staff
  • Warning notices outside the procedure room
  • Use of non-reflective instruments
  • Avoidance of flammable materials

Adverse Effects of Laser Treatments

Laser treatments can result in temporary pain, redness, bruising, blistering, and crusting, as well as potential infections, including herpes simplex reactivation. Pigment changes (brown and white marks) may occur and can be permanent, and scarring is possible. But when done under expert guidance complications are none to minimal.

Scar Treatment

Acne scarring is a common side effect of acne breakouts which occurs as a result of damage to the skin during the healing of active acne. According to Dr. Tanreet Kaur , a renowned specialist for acne scar treatment in Amritsar, a scar is the body’s response to healing the wound, in which the skin cells combine with the connective tissue, and cell multiplication takes place to repair the damage. Acne scars also develop because of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, forming red, black, and brown discoloration of the affected skin surface. Some scars may resolve on their own, but most of these disfiguring marks do not resolve without treatment.

Types of Acne Scars

There are two types of acne scars depending on whether there is a net gain or loss of collagen.

  1. Atrophic Scars: These scars develop when there is a loss of tissue and when enough fibroblast or connective tissue is not made during the healing period. These scars appear as small depressions in the skin. They are further divided into:
1.1 Icepick: These types of scars are deep, narrow, sharp, and extend vertically deep into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue.
1.2 Boxcar: These types of scars have oval to round depressions and have vertical edges that are sharply demarcated.
1.3 Rolling Scar: They appear as sunken or wavy areas on the affected area and lack sharp borders. These are formed when a fibrous band of tissue develops between the skin and subcutaneous tissue.
  2. Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars: These types of scars are typically pink and raised in appearance. These are produced due to excess collagen production and deposition with decreased collagenase activity.
2.1 These occur in the original site of injury that contains thick hyalinized collagen bundles. Keloids occur in the form of reddish-purple nodules and papules and often grow beyond the border of the original wound.

    • Steroid creams help reduce inflammation and can be used to prevent keloids and hypertrophic scars.

    • Silicone gels are applied to scars to flatten and soften them over time.

    • Cryotherapy involves freezing the scar tissue to reduce its size.

    • Dermal filler injections can be used to fill in depressed scars, making the skin appear smoother.
